Joshua Xernandez- “vicious” freestyle over a Shahin Moezzi beat

Texture.

I think one of my favorite separators in hip hop is one’s vocal texture. It took me years to develop my own to the point that I was like “Whoa, that’s me. That’s what I sound like.” I used to do raspy flows, yelling flows (pssh I’m 32, so pre 6ixNine or whatever), nasally flows, etc. before I landed on the way I inflect my bars.

I say all of this because it’s my favorite part of Josh’s submission. I mean the dudes got bars and that’s evident, as this is a freestyle and it still tickles every part of my linguist funny bone. But the texture of his voice is super dope, to me, and I’m sure to others as well.

I think when we start rapping, we know we got it somehow, someway. You just feel it in your bones. You have that certain gear that others maybe don’t even know exists. It’s what propels us forward with our art. That’s how I feel when listening to Josh’s music. I feel like he’s found that gear and is poised to shift into it when the universe lets him know it’s time.

And if the music keeps coming and the bars and quality are there?

Shit.

That might be soon, bruh.
